Praise the Light

Orca isn't just light. It is 6.7 kg of climbing technology designed to change how you reach the top. A 745 g OMX frame, 32C clearance and the kind of instant acceleration you feel on every pedal stroke. Twelve builds and two framesets at CANNASIA.

The bike

A frame that knows where to be light, and where to be stiff

The feeling of a bike this light and efficient is unbeatable. That instant acceleration, the vibration absorption and the responsive handling all come from a frame engineered to be light in the right places and stiff in the ones that matter. It is possible to make very light bikes, but if you lose efficiency to a lack of rigidity there is no point. Orbea started with a target rigidity, then made the Orca as light as possible without compromising it.

Sold, built and serviced in Singapore by CANNASIA, the official Orbea distributor. We build and fit every Orca at 83 Frankel Avenue, and we will happily talk you through whether the OMX frame is worth it for the riding you actually do here.

Many marginal gains

Many marginal gains

Working with component and wheel designers from the start to optimise stiffness and weight.

01 · Dominate the climbs

Light weight is many marginal gains

Achieving the Orca's weight required obsessing over details and using the best materials across the range. Considering the bike as a complete package meant working with component and wheel designers right from the start to optimise both stiffness and weight.

02 · Pure light

By the numbers

Reducing weight is all about taking care of the details. The lighter a frame gets, the harder it becomes to remove more without compromising something. Only by tightly controlling every process can you consistently reduce weight, honing in on the smallest details.

6.7 kg

Frame weights are an average of several randomly selected production frames: OMX 745 g, OMR 1030 g. Details like coating (15 g), paint (25 g) and hardware (40 g) all lower the bottom line. The sum of all parts is a remarkable 6.7 kg for the M10i LTD.

OMX carbon — 745 g

OMX carbon — 745 g

OMX is used only for the lightest, stiffest performance racing frame Orbea builds, the pinnacle of their carbon fibre manufacturing.

OMR carbon — 1030 g

OMR carbon — 1030 g

OMR is the second-level carbon, offering all the rigidity and strength of OMX for riders who do not need the ultimate in low weight.

Not a gram wasted

So how was it achieved? By treating every small detail as worth the effort.

Minimal design

Minimal design

As well as looking good, the minimalist seat clamp and derailleur hangers save weight. Another win-win.

Focus on the shapes

Focus on the shapes

Any corner on a frame gives excess epoxy somewhere to gather. Carefully designing the tube intersections to remove sharp edges reduces those pockets and cuts weight with no disadvantages.

Remove overlaps

Remove overlaps

The top-level OMX frame uses fewer pieces of carbon, meaning fewer overlaps and less weight. It takes far more effort to lay up, but it saves almost 300 g with no change in rigidity.

Aerodynamics, quietly

Worked in wherever it costs nothing in weight.

03 · Aerodynamics in the details

Integrated wherever possible, never at the expense of lightness

Aerodynamic details are carefully worked in where they can be, but never at the cost of the bike's ultimate goal: pure, uncompromising lightness. If you want the aero-first approach instead, that is what the Orca Aero is for.

Fork

Fork

The fork is designed to minimise weight, but the clever shape reduces drag at the same time.

Seatpost clamp

Seatpost clamp

The seatpost clamp adds a touch of style while being lighter than ever, and the minimalist design improves aerodynamics.

04 · Lightweight components

Chosen for how they elevate the ride

From premium OC components to ultra-responsive OQUO wheels, each part is picked not just for its weight but for what it does to the way the bike rides.

Efficiency you can feel

Start with a target rigidity, then remove every gram you can.

05 · Stiff where it counts, light where it matters

Start with rigidity, then remove weight

It is possible to make very light bikes, but if you lose efficiency due to a lack of rigidity then it makes no sense. Orbea designed the Orca from a target rigidity that guarantees even the strongest riders get efficient power transmission, then made it as light as possible without compromising that number.

Size-tuned stiffness

Size-tuned stiffness

Using the same carbon layup in every frame size would make larger frames less stiff and change how they feel. Orbea alters the layup for each size so every Orca feels the same. It is a lot more work, but it is the sort of detail you notice on the road.

Powerspine

Powerspine

The lower spine of the frame handles the large majority of torsional and lateral loads. The head tube, down tube and chainstays resist twisting and transmit power to the rear wheel.

Built around a number

Built around a number

Rather than chasing the lowest possible weight and accepting whatever stiffness resulted, Orbea fixed the rigidity target first. Everything else was then engineered around it.

Where the loads go

Where the loads go

The head tube, down tube and chainstays carry the twisting and lateral forces. Reinforcing that path is what turns your effort into forward motion instead of frame flex.

The lack of inertia

The lack of inertia

Agile and responsive as you carve through corners and accelerate out.

06 · Lightweight ride feel

Instant response, every pedal stroke

The feel of a lightweight bike is unbeatable. The lack of inertia means an agile, responsive ride as you carve through corners and accelerate out the other side.

Compliant but efficient

Compliant but efficient

Slim, round frame profiles offer more compliance, and the lack of vibration on less-than-perfect roads adds to the effortless feeling of riding an Orca. Pedalling efficiency is preserved by the Powerspine, which maximises rigidity and resists pedalling forces.

Versatile tyre clearance

Versatile tyre clearance

With clearance for 32C tyres, Orca acknowledges that speed can also be comfortable. Modern road riders have discovered the advantages of bigger tyres on rougher surfaces, and our patched tarmac qualifies.

Balanced handling

Balanced handling

For a high-performance bike, the most important thing is that it must be easy to ride. A shorter wheelbase makes it more responsive, size-specific fork trail gives improved control, and racing ergonomics translate into more watts.

Compliant, but never soft

Slim round profiles take the buzz out of the road without costing efficiency.

Ride it here

No mountains. So why a climbing bike?

Fair question, and worth answering honestly. A 6.7 kg bike is not going to transform a flat island ride the way it transforms an alpine pass. What it does give you is instant acceleration out of every corner and traffic light, a bike that feels alive under you, and something genuinely special for the trips where the road does go up.

Central & south

Mount Faber, Kent Ridge, Telok Blangah

Short, steep and repeatable. Our climbs are measured in minutes, not hours, which rewards a bike that accelerates the instant you stand up.

North-west

Kranji, Lim Chu Kang & Neo Tiew

The classic Sunday loop. Rolling rather than flat, with enough surges that a light, responsive bike is a pleasure rather than an indulgence.

Everywhere

Stop-start city riding

Lights, junctions and traffic mean you accelerate constantly. Low inertia is arguably more useful here than on a long alpine drag.

Our roads

32C clearance is not a luxury

Patched tarmac, expansion joints and the odd rough stretch. Wider tyres at lower pressure make a real difference to comfort and grip in the wet.

Further afield

Where it truly comes alive

Cameron Highlands, Genting, Fraser's Hill, Bintan and the wider region. This is the bike you take when the elevation profile finally looks interesting.
